The Things We Do for Love

My sister Liza gave Meander and me a "blog assignment" in which I am supposed to write about a favorite childhood memory. Híjole! In the first place, I am so bad at picking favorites. I feel that by choosing one as a favorite, I am somehow betraying all the wonderment inclusive in those now designated "not-favorite" by default. (Paulette actually described this better about a month ago. ) Also, nostalgia makes me feel ever-so-slightly creepy and passé. Because as St. Paul the Misogynist said, When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things.

But I am a woman, not a man; and since one of my two favorite sisters asked me and because I already blogged a childhood memory this monthe re:
glockenspiels ... I will tell you about another pleasant childhood memory.

I was about 5 years old. It was December, and my best friend Jeff and I had been cooped up indoors because of the weather. On this particular night, however, something to fulfill our wildest space nerd desires was going to occur. The Star Wars Holiday Special
was being broadcast on TV. We ate dinner at Jeff's and were going to my house to watch the show. It was raining and dark, and we were both giddy with anticipation and the very special privelege of being able to walk in the dark without supervision -- even though it was only around the corner. We huddled together under an umbrella and spontaneously began singing together at the top of our lungs:

And maybe I'm superimposing it in retrospect, but I seem to remember thinking how great it was to have a friend who loved Star Wars, umbrellas and singing as much as me.

See that wasn't so hard, was it? It is nice to have a friend to love the things you love. And I purposly said "one of your favorite" so as not to exclude anything you didn't pick from your list of favorites!

You're right, Liza Jane. And it was kind of fun.

Truthfully, I think you pretty much almost have to love singing and Star Wars to spend any extensive amount of time around me.

That was so sweet, it almost made me cry. There is nothing quite like a great guy friend who loves the same things you do, even at 5 years old.

Any friend who shares your eccentricities is special.

Laurie, I've never met you in person -- but you're definitely special. Come to Chicago sometime and I'll show you around.

Lots of free concerts here in the summer.

Hey she could come in July for Blogher!

There you go! My sister is right about that, Laurie. Come to Blogher in July. There'll be tons of free music that time of year and you can hang with the Sisters Strong.

Liza and La Sirena - Oh, I would love to but I have my first grand-fabulous-baby due in July so I better stay close to home. I definitely need to do a Blog-Her thing someday though. I hear they're great.

Oh, that's so exciting. We love babies.

We'll give you a report.
