Muscley Mama

I'm slowly getting better. My doctor is giving me steroid infusions for 3 hours a day, I'm starting to remember words and I'm going back to work on Thursday.

Do you think I'm sexier on steroids?

Monday Night Purgatory

I wanted to go to Weeds tonight for the open mike poetry because it was the annual Erotica Valentine's reading but I'm feeling decidely UN-erotic. I've never been very good at writing erotica, either. My work goes quickly pornographic and it doesn't take long to turn completely hardcore. Then Gregorio sent out a message that there would be filming and we should dress up and then possibly fall in love with someone. The pressure was mounting. Then I got my period (see what I mean about the suddenly hardcore) and had to drive to the far south side to visit someone in the hospital. Also, whenever I go to Weeds I end up drinking a bunch of tequilas and the next thing I know it's 4:30 a.m. and I'm getting thrown out of the Old Town Ale House. I wouldn't feel right tomorrow morning asking the patients how much they've been drinking while tequila and lime seep out of my pores and the seven dwarves sing "heigh ho" in my skull while driving sledgehammers against my temples.

I hate working in the mornings. It is decidedly not erotic.

Fashionably Late

I went with my friend to her big work shindig last night. I didn't get the memo about the dress code. Most of the women were wearing little black dresses with tights and shoes very much like the one pictured here. (Call me old-fashioned but I'm pretty sure you aren't supposed to wear hose with open-toed shoes.) I wore jeans and my peely red leather boots. Sometimes I feel like Clint Eastwood. That's probably why everyone was casually feeling out the true nature of the relationship between my friend and me. She and I are friends, not "girlfriends" but still, I refused to debunk that myth. That would be very un-cowboy of me.

In keeping with the flavor of the evening, we slipped away before the dancing and went to the secret bar. There was a cowboy band playing complete with a violinist and a lead guitarist with a 1950s era Fender in virginal white which contrasted nicely with his black pearl snap western shirt. The band was good. The lead singer was Australian but everybody knows Australians make the best rednecks because they're from the Deep South.

I can't remember the name of the band but my friend had to pass the tip jar because she's outgoing, trustworthy and was wearing a nice femme outfit. I guess that makes me the butch -- well, that and my Clint Eastwood glare.

A Slogan I Can Get Behind

I just bought a box of these buttons from the Evil Slut Clique. I love it because it's funny, sarcastic and cheap. All of this while celebrating the holidays and making fun of the religious right. Merry, merry!!!
And then after I purchased them BlogHo suddenly posted again. And then an old Smiths' song I hadn't heard in years came on the music station I'm streaming (which doesn't really have anything to do with hoes, but it still pleased me). Oh, ho ho holy angels I have heard on high -- hooray!!!

Reading Is FUNdamental

Like so many fundaMENTALists, Governor Palin of Alaska has trouble separating fact from metaphor. For example, last night she stridently asserted that ...

However, please see the chart below and note that excepting those people earning more than a quarter of a million dollars a year, Senator Obama's tax plan actually decreases income tax more than Senator McCain's plan. Senator Obama would create budget surplus, rather than Senator McCain's defecit. Maybe Governor Palin should clean her glasses.

The tax plans:

Incomes of:
--Obama-- --McCain
$227,000 - a year - plus -- --$23,000 more-- --$15,000 less
$112,000 - $227,000-- --$2,300 less-- --$3,200 less
$66,000 - $112,000--
--$1,290 less-- --$1,009 less
$38,000 - $66,000-- --$1,042 less-- --$319 less
$19,000 - $38,000-- --$892 less-- --$113 less
$0 - $19,000-- --$567 less-- --$19 less

For everyone:
$4,000/yr /college student
Double the dependent credit to $7,000

Impact of tax changes on federal budget:
Obama's plan will return $700 billion
McCain's plan will cost us $600 billion
Source: Chicago Sun-Times

(Oh and FYI, John McCain has never voted in favor of a bill which would help small businesses or relieve their taxes or make those taxes equitable to big business. I don't know what Heather is going to do if McCain and Palin win the election in Novemeber.)

Oh, and a shout out to Michael who sent me the candidate's tax plan chart.

The Planet Is Fine

I love those random conversations with strangers in which you feel tightly, yet temporarily connected to this other person somehow. Or, barring the sensation of a personal connection, I love having a random conversation with a stranger in which it seems that one or the other of you (or both) is passing on some kind of clue.

And as I get older, I find myself having random clue-like conversations with strangers in which our bizarre exchange indicates to me that this very intimate spiritual and philosophical spiral path I've been traveling IS relevant and meaningful, at least for me and the occasional random stranger.

I saw M. Night Shyamalan's The Happening at the theater the other night. (Parenthetical snatch* -- I forget how much better movies are in the theater on the big screen. DVDs are convenient, cheap and fabulous for lazy entertainment and escapism, but you really end up missing something in the transition to the small screen.) Anyway, I recommend The Happening, but I'm not really going to tell you about it because you know how you just have to see his movies and let them unfold to really enjoy them. Also, the theater where I saw it was crowded and about one third of the audience seemed to really enjoy it and two-thirds were pissed, saying things like, remind me never to see another M. Night Shyamalan movie. In other words, he didn't necessarily tailor this to soothe the fears and meet the expectations of the status quo.

So when the movie ended, my friend and I did the post-movie meaningful look that says, Whoa, good, I think. Need a minute. And the lady in her early sixties with fabulous earrings and a very sharp gauze pantsuit (confession: sometimes I'm into certain kinds of clothes and accessories) on the other side of my friend also gets in the post-movie glance interchange with us. And she and I start chatting while waiting for the grumbling crowd to pass.

Random Stranger Lady (RSL): Well, I really enjoyed that!
La Sirena (LS) and Friend: Me, too! (he owes me a coke)

RSL: You know, lots of people have been saying things like that, that plants are interactive and you should talk to them, like... (lots of people are walking by and complaining here so I don't catch the first five names she rattles off)...and George Washington Carver. You know, and I think I would hate people if I were a plant. We deserve everything we get and then some!

LS: You know what George Carlin said about the earth, that she's just going to--

LS and RSL: (in perfectly metered unison)-- shake us off like a bunch of fleas!!! (The women laugh while the passing 20-something hipster doofi fire them looks of annoyed confusion.)

And so this is my roundabout way of saying goodbye to George Carlin and here is the full text of the Carlin bit from which the aforementioned quote came.

Goodbye, George -- or is it, really? Perhaps you've just attached yourself to another valence?

* Wouldn't "Parenthetical Snatch" be a great name for a band?

Tin Foil Hats

Contrary to popular folklore, tin foil hats will not protect your brain from radio waves, televison rays or cell phone interference. According to a team of researchers at MIT, this widely circulated rumor ... is likely to have been propagated by the Government, possibly with the involvement of the FCC.

In a pilot study performed on themselves, these dedicated researchers found that tinfoil hats actually magnify the intensity of power transmitted to the head, thereby making the wearer of this protective device even more vulnerable to radio wave mind control than those not wearing aluminum foil hats. The research did not investigate the ability of aluminum foil to protect the human brain from extraterresterial technology. We also can't be sure if tin foil may have once protected people, as all modern foil is now aluminum.

I Love Dresses

Last night fox tv broadcast the Emmy Awards. They sucked, but as I may have mentioned before, the glam red carpet gowns really bring out the girl in me. OK, I LOVE fancy dresses and while the Emmys aren't quite as spectacular as the Oscars from a fashion perspective, there were still some impressive gowns. Here are a couple of my favorites. I love that shocking pink and drapey cleavage on Felicity Huffman (also like the hair) and Vanessa Williams green feathery glamour is unique and fun. However, I lack the mesomorphic body type of Felicity as well as Vanessa's statuesque leanness. I would look ridiculous in either of these dresses that cost more than my car.

Nope. I'm built close to the ground and for comfort like Ms. Ferrera. And she looks quite lovely and elegant as well. God bless America. (Of course, to look this good, I would have to work out 5 hours a day, 5 days a week and subsist on nothing but rice cakes and water for 2 months.) OK. There's my ridiculous girl moment for the next 3 months. But please tell me, which dress was your favorite?
